FM Announces Jan Samarth Based KCC Issuance in Five States, Boosts Digital Public Infrastructure for Agriculture.
In five states, the government would try to make it possible to issue Kisan Credit Cards (KCC), according to Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman. "In addition, five states will be able to issue Jan Samarth-based Kisan Credit Cards," Sitharaman stated in her union budget statement to the parliament.
In 1998, KCC was developed to allow farmers to receive cards based on their holdings, which the banks would then uniformly accept. This would allow farmers to easily buy agricultural inputs including seeds, fertiliser, pesticides, and other supplies, as well as withdraw cash for their production needs. In 2004, the program was expanded to include allied and non-farm industries that farmers, needed investment credit for. Furthermore, the government will help the agriculture industry integrate the Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI).
"15. Buoyed by the success of the pilot project, our government, in partnership with the states, will facilitate the implementation of the digital public infrastructure (DPI) in agriculture for coverage of farmers and their lands in 3 years," Sitharaman stated.
In addition, the FM stated that this year the digital crop survey for Kharif using the DPI will be taken up in 400 districts. "The details of six crore farmers and their lands will be brought into the farmer and land registries," she continued.
