In her recent speech to Parliament on Friday, President Droupadi Murmu emphasised the government's initiatives to give modernisation and independence in India's agricultural first priority.

An important step towards these objectives was taken in 2023–24 when India produced a record 322 million tonnes of foodgrains.

Important Government Measures

The President outlined important government measures, including the sanctioning of Tribuvan Sahakai University to promote prosperity through collaborative projects and the disbursement of Rs 41,000 crore to farmers under the PM-Kisan Samman Nidhi.

Murmu listed many initiatives, including the recently authorised National Mission on Oilseeds and the enlarged agri-infrastructure fund program, which aims to create jobs in rural areas and enhance farm infrastructure across the country.

Over the past ten years, investments in staples including wheat, pulses, oilseeds, and coarse cereals have tripled, which is reflected in the steady increases in the minimum support price for rabi and kharif crops.

Along with a unique subsidy scheme for reasonably priced DAP fertilisers, 109 high-yield, climate-resilient, and bio-fortified seed varieties have been released to encourage resilience among farmers.

The President also highlighted initiatives to improve aquaculture and the introduction of the Rs 2,000-crore Mission Mausam, which is anticipated to provide additional advantages to the farming community.
